Imo state government says it has lost over N6billion to contractors who abandoned road projects awarded to them.
Gov. Rochas Okorocha who disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting of
the Community Government Council (CGC) and government officials at the
Ahiajoku Convention Centre, Owerri, stated that the state government has
spent more than N21billion on various road projects in the state out of
which N6billion is missing.
The governor stated that the N21 billion was estimated to take care
of 1000km of roads across the 27 local governments areas of the state,
but lamented that only 300km of roads were done, mostly without
drainages.
He called on the members of the CGCs in the local governments to meet
with the respective contractors handling road projects in their
communities and assess the level of work done.
Okorocha who also charged the CGC members to use the law enforcement
officers to arrest defaulting contractors to force them return to site,
directed that a project monitoring committee comprising CGC members be
set up to appraise the level of job done in their respective
communities.
The governor threatened that any community whose youths obstruct road construction works by demanding money from contractors would have their contracts revoked and contractor withdrawn from site.
